We know peppers as an ingredient we normally see in our daily meal. However, how much do we know about pepper and its kind? Now let me tell you that pepper is not only red and spicy but it has so much more to offer than that.
Today I will share with you the 20 types of pepper but actually There are currently over thirty different known species of chile pepper. The majority of these are actually “wild” pepper species (found growing primarily in South America), including the C. cardenasii, C. eximium and C. chacoense.
Let us start with Medusa Pepper
- Medusa Pepper (- is ornamental chili pepper that has a very bright color from yellow and orange to a sharp red color when fully ripe. It is long and thin producing a âhair of snakesâ which is attributed to Greek mythology goddess Medusa.
- Serrano Pepper (Capsicum annuum)- is a type of pepper that originated from the Mexican states of Puebla and Hidalgo. If still not ripe, it is color green however; the color varies in different maturity level. Sometimes it is green, red, brown, orange or yellow. It is also hot and crispy to taste.
- Rocotillo Pepper (Capsicum baccatum) – this is a type of pepper that originated from Peru. The colors are green or yellow if not ripe but the color of maturity varies. It is spherical in shape, normally 2.5 cm long and 2.5cm wide.
- Malagueta Pepper (Capsicum frutescens var. malagueta, Solanacease)-Â it is a small tapered and green pepper that turns red as it matures. It is 5cm in length at maturity. It is a very hot pepper with a range of 60,000 to 100,000 scoville units.
- Tabasco Pepper- is a variety of chili pepper species of Capsicum frutescens. It has a bushy growth; it is 4cm long pale yellowish-green and turn yellow and orange before ripening to bright red. This type of pepper is very spicy since it rates from 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville.
- Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum)- this fruit is also known as peppercorn when dried. It is 5 millimeters in diameter has a dark red color when fully mature and it only contain a single seed.
- Naga Bhut Jolokia- is the hottest and spiciest pepper hitting the top spot in the Scoville Scale. Normally it occurs in the interspecific hybrid from the Assam region of northeastern India. It is 5.95 to 8.54 cm in length and 2.5 to 2.95 in width.
- Red Savina Pepper- this is the second spiciest type of pepper, it is selectively bred to produce that kind of spice, hotness and heavy fruit. The method of how this fruit was produce is not publicly known. Frank Garcia of GNS Spices, in Walnut, California, is credited with being the developer of the Red Savina habanero.
- Habanero Pepper- unripe habaneros are green in color but when mature it turns out to be orange, red and sometimes white, brown and pink in colors. It is 2-6 cm long. It rates 100,000-350,000 on the Scoville scale.
- Scotch Bonnet- also known as Scotch bonnet, it belongs in the same family as Habaneros. This spicy fruit can be seen abundantly in the Caribbean, Maldives and Guyana. Fresh ripe scotch bonnets change from green to colours ranging from pumpkin orange to scarlet red.
That is mainly it, remember that these are just few of the types of Pepper we now today. The similarity of these species varies to the compound called Capsasicin. Today, Capsaicin has found to bring many health benefits to the human body. One breakthrough of this compound is its ability to help burn fat.
